The bank crisis - your thoughts

Postby BigBrother on Sun Aug 23, 2009 4:14 pm

Personally I feel that the sack of the 5 bank CEOs by the Central Bank wasn't warranted. The CBN action would only depress the economy further. The situation could have been managed in a better manner.
The EFCC chairman, Farida Waziri, seems to be making matters worse. Giving 7 days to debtors to refund billions in loan they have taken is a wrong step. Asking them to issue cheques in the name of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (or was it EFCC) instead of the bank being owed is not right. Let's see how it will unfold. What do you think?

giving 7days to refund billions is kinda harsh but the sack was definitely in d right direction we all know that only drastic steps and not mere warnings is what makes nigerians sit upright and do the right thing although they could have handed the bank over to interim CEOs to manage the bank out of the crisis and then returned to the original CEOs after a period of time

I've not been following what has been happening for a while. EFCC became a debt collection agency giving threats to bank debtors to pay up or risk jail - very civil. I've not heard anything about the remaining 14 banks - did Sanusi target some banks for takeover? I'm not convinced about the manner the CBN governor went about his job. I wish him all the best

I think the bank executives who made the decision to loan to certain people should be held accountable as well. It is possible they did not heed certain warning signals that the debtors would be inclined to default on the loans. Same as what brought about the sub-prime crisis here.

i am starting to believe the accusations about the CBN guvnor having alterior motives in all of this meanwhile what is the business of EFCC in collection of debts while corrupt government officials are walking free.
