I can change location but I will not be guaranteed the same customer base as at present. The more customers the more successful my stuff is. I'll need new equipments. It will be very costly to shift location. It will only pay if I can get as good a customer base. So moving is definitely an option but a business risk.

Business risks vs Personal Risks. This is difficult. Are you taking adequate steps to protect yourself? Also, do you have insurance against theft and so on? Can you do online business to supplement what you have? Hold on to what you have, build your customer base, save your money and when your judgement tells you that you can't risk it anymore, then you will need to move.
Remember, as long as you have your life, you can start again.

True. I now do most of the work online. I travel out of my base most of the time. The only problem is I need to help some people to complete the settings on their systems cause not everyone is vast at I.T. This process keeps holding me down there. I even offer some extra help to them by making sure their systems are stable. Organisations that subscribe to me will need me for their networking and I have to be available. I've gotten people to do some of the works but certain companies will demand my presence. Anything besides these, I monitor over the internet.

So what you are saying is moving around poses a threat to your safety. Is it really that bad? I guess I have to ask because I am so removed from it. Where is your base? How about hiring a bodyguard?! :)
The more you educate your customers about their system, the less dependent they will be on your physical presence at their site. But you don't want to make them not need you anymore either. I am sure you spend time with them on the phone too. When you say monitor online, do you mean you remote in?

Traveling is not really one of my major concerns. My main problem is that my business is based in the north of the country. The north is known for religious crisis once in a while. I think some international bodies are paying some muslims in the country to act violent. Even places in the country like Jos and Niger which were relatively peaceful northern states are now experiencing strife on this matter. My folks keep complaining and its like someone breathing heavily down my neck. Thats were I'm stuck.
I monitor online, meaning I have a software that I use through the internet to check how much of my bandwith is being consumed by each customer. Who and who is online, when their time has expired, e.t.c.

Donmayor - what part of this is nice?

Soto, now that you have explained some more, I understand better. You say it is only once in a while that the crisis there flares up, so you shouldn't be in danger all the time. That is a relief, isn't it? Most business ventures involve risk taking and in your case the occasional violent environment is the risk. This doesn't mean you should pack up and rush away. Just use your best judgement and know when to stay away temporarily or permanently. It is natural for your folks to be worried about your well-being, but they must also understand this is what you want to do, this is where your success comes from and that you are capable of taking care of yourself. Perhaps if they tone down a bit on the complaining, some of your stress will be eased.

I was replying to the 2nd to the last post on the previous page, I had no idea it had gone to page 4. The idea that this forum had motivated soto :).
@Soto
I guess you have a lot of difficult customers considering your line of business :). Pippa made an interesting point when she said the more you educate your customers about their system, the less dependent they will be on your physical presence at their site. But you don't want to make them not need you anymore either - that was my experience when I was doing IT jobs for people. I taught them tricks that I used to collect money for and my phone stopped ringing :). Give them just enough information for them to still need you but at the same time they won't need to call you every time. It's challenging operating a business in Nigeria and I wish you the very best in yours. The opportunities in your line abounds, it's just the rough operating terrain in Nigeria and infrastructural deficiency.

I would recognize that jobs might not be available in the field of your study, and I might even admire your ability to see that and your courage to make a switch. As to why you think you will be successful, I would want to know what sort of connections you have with this new field.
