…A man can be kind and a father could stay!

Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father could stay

When Kelly Clarkson wrote “because of you” many years back, she talked about a father who left her and disappointed her taking away her trust. I recently heard her new song “piece by piece” and it seems to talk of a man restoring her faith that a man could be kind and a father stay.

Why do I write about this? I hope someday to be a father. I was lucky to be raised by both my parents. I have also met beautiful people who were raised by a single parent. This write up does not seek to explore the similarities and differences in the life outcomes of the different upbringing. I seek to understand why a man will leave his daughter or son and not look back. Family circumstances arise that could cause separation but no family circumstance should lead to outright abandonment. I may be wrong.

Why would I want to miss her say the word dad? Why would I want to miss her take her first step? Why would I want to miss the feeling of her tiny fingers in my hands? Why would I want to miss her chit chats as she learns to talk? Why would I want to miss her first day in school? Why would I want to miss her growing up? Why would I run away from these memories? It’s hard to fathom.

However, this is a call to men all over to be like the man Kelly Clarkson talked about- restoring faith!

I would never leave her like you left me
She will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m gonna put her first
He’ll never walk away
He’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things
He’ll love her
Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father should be great
